Martial Arts: Mouroum's Passionate Plea for School Inclusion
Let's Shimmy and Groove: A Rhythmic Encounter - Dance performer Mouroum advocates for martial arts education in schools.
Let's get real, folks! You probably recognize the fierce face behind Hollywood stunts - Marie Mouroum. Known for her killer moves on RTL's "Let's Dance," she's now raring to shake up German education, advocating for martial arts to become a permanent subject in schools.
"Imagine if it was a regular sport in schools!" the 32-year-old Berliner excitedly shared with the Press Agency. "In many Eastern European countries, it's already part of the basics, just like track and field and gymnastics. How cool would that be?"
Martial arts, she explained, are especially empowering for girls, helping them build confidence. "Boys are usually confident, they like to show off their strength. But girls? It's a different ball game."
"Girls need to build strength"
"It's crucial for girls to understand their power, learn self-defense, and know they can protect themselves when they need to," she stressed. "It gives you a sense of strength that sticks with you, helps you walk through life more confidently."
Respect and control
Discipline is a key component of martial arts, Mouroum emphasized. "It's all about respect – respect for yourself and others. You learn to control your emotions and not misuse your skills outside the dojo."
This Saturday (June 28), the dynamic martial artist will be reporting backstage at the mixed martial arts event "Oktagon 73" in Hamburg. "Oktagon 73" kicks off at 5:30 PM on RTL+, with Germany's most famous MMA star, Christian Eckerlin, making his comeback after an eight-month break in the main fight.
From Bond to stunt life
Originally from the big city of Berlin, Mouroum has been tearing up the stunt world since she was 18. She's doubled for stars like Queen Latifah in "The Equalizer" and Bond girl Lashana Lynch in "James Bond 007: No Time to Die."
Her most daring stunt, she recalled, took place in the Bond film. "You leap from one building to another!" The agent she doubled was kidnapping a scientist in Cuba, and the scene called for some serious free-falling action. "Just before hitting the ground, a rope catches you. It's a heart-stopping moment, wondering if the rope will actually catch you."
Life in stunts isn't always sunshine and roses, she admitted. "In 'The Equalizer', I broke my ankle and ruptured my ankle ligaments. I jumped from a second-floor balcony into a cardboard box meant to break my fall. But it was freezing, and the mat on top was like concrete. The box didn't break, and that's when I broke my ankle." She also suffered a rib contusion, and currently, she's nursing a torn ACL.
