"Dan Weber's Just Sayin': College basketball's CJ bids farewell, as Northern Kentucky University welcomes in three experienced transfer players"
Northern Kentucky University Men's Basketball Welcomes Three Transfers
Northern Kentucky University (NKU) men's basketball coach Darrin Horn is bringing three new players via the transfer portal for the upcoming season. Among the new recruits are Louisville native Tae Dozier, Miami, Fla. native Shawn Nelson, and Division II player Kael Robinson from Montana State (Billings).
CJ Fredrick, a renowned three-point specialist, will not be joining the team as he announced his retirement from playing. Fredrick, a graduate student, had a seven-year college basketball career, playing at Iowa, Kentucky, and Cincinnati. His career was marked by several significant achievements, including being named to the All-Big Ten Freshmen team during his redshirt freshman season at Iowa and being named the Gatorade Player of the Year in Kentucky in 2018.
Fredrick's career was, however, marred by injuries. He injured his other hamstring during his time at Cincinnati and had to undergo preseason surgery on his left hamstring, which caused him to miss an entire season. Unfortunately, he also suffered a season-ending February back injury while playing at UC. Despite these setbacks, Fredrick was a prolific scorer, particularly at Rupp Arena, where he scored 111 points in four Sweet 16 games, averaging 27.8 points.
Dozier, a third-team NAIA All-American for the 29-5 Tigers, is joining NKU after four seasons at NAIA Georgetown (Ky.) College. He averaged 11.5 points, 6.6 rebounds, 3.1 assists, 1.7 steals, and 1.5 blocks as a redshirt junior. Horn described Dozier as long, athletic, multi-dimensional, efficient, and having a unique impact defensively.
Nelson, who is joining NKU from North Carolina's Barton College, averaged 18.9 points, 5.3 rebounds, 4.5 assists, and more than a steal per game. He also shot an impressive 50.1% from the field, 41 percent from three-point range, and had 244 free throw attempts.
The Bearcats won all six games when Fredrick scored before his injury, highlighting his significant contribution to the team. Despite Fredrick's retirement, the addition of Dozier, Nelson, and Robinson promises an exciting new chapter for NKU men's basketball.
