'Dan Gilroy, writer of 'Andor', reveals the reason for the series' recent resurfacing in audience minds (shying away from Emmys consideration)'.

In a thought-provoking op-ed published in Deadline, Dan Gilroy, brother of Andor creator Tony Gilroy, has issued a "Welcome to the Rebellion"-style wake-up call to the entertainment industry.

Gilroy compares the silencing of shows critical of a leader to the actions of Putin after taking power, drawing parallels between the fictional world of the Disney+ drama Andor and the real world. He discusses the fascist takeover theme in the series, highlighting its relevance in today's political landscape.

The essay, styled as "Welcome to the Rebellion," calls for attention and vigilance in the entertainment industry. Gilroy argues that artists are often the first to be censored due to fear, and he encourages action, urging people to educate themselves, organize, and speak truth to authority.

Gilroy also expresses his disagreement with Disney's decision to suspend Jimmy Kimmel. He warns the Hollywood industry about the potential worsening of events in a "brave new Trumpian world."

The Disney Star Wars show, Andor, won Outstanding Writing for a Drama Series at the Emmys for the ninth episode titled "Welcome to the Rebellion." Dan Gilroy, the op-ed's author, was the recipient of the award.

The episode "Welcome to the Rebellion" features Mon Mothma delivering a ferocious speech condemning genocide and monstrous leaders from the senate floor. Gilroy emphasises the importance of not letting fear and hopelessness deter action, stating that the pen is in the hand of the people, implying the power to write the story lies with them.

Creatives and subscribers have called for a boycott of Disney, the parent company of ABC and Star Wars. However, the essay does not contain any advertisements for Marvel, Star Wars, Star Trek, DC Universe, or Doctor Who.

For those who have not cancelled their Disney+ subscription, Andor is still available for viewing. The essay can be read in full at Deadline. Gilroy sees parallels between Andor and the real world, particularly in the events of the last week.
