Dampening China Deal Expectations: Trump's Statements Cast Doubt on Trade Agreement Progress

Back in early May, a fragile truce seemed within reach between the U.S. and China as they sought to dial down their bitter trade war. Regrettably, things have taken a turn for the worse with tit-for-tat recriminations erupting once more. This pessimistic shift in sentiment, expressed by U.S. President Donald Trump, reveals his belief that reaching a resolution to the trade dispute any time soon may well remain a pipedream.

Trump voiced his frustration with Chinese President Xi Jinping on his Truth Social platform, stating, "Sure, I like the guy. But he's a stubborn sod, and it's blasted hard to strike a deal with him." Both camps have traded vicious claims, alleging one another's non-compliance with agreements or escalating sanctions.

In spite of a temporary ceasefire in the trade hostilities since mid-May, the U.S. has made several adverse moves. For instance, the U.S. impeded the delivery of essential turbine components to China, and attempted to block China's access to vital chip technology, causing much discontent in Beijing.

Fiery Exchanges in the Trade War Battlefield

Reports have also emerged of Chinese students studying in the U.S. having their visas revoked. This, coupled with allegations that China has been withholding key minerals crucial for the automotive sector, has muddied the waters. The reasons for Trump's latest tirade are still unclear. There were rumors earlier in the week suggesting that Trump and Xi could engage in talks, but that's yet to materialize.

Just before Trump's post, financial news agency Bloomberg reported a tantalizing possibility: China could place substantial orders for aircraft from Airbus, the leading aircraft manufacturer, during the visit of European dignitaries in July.

May 12 Agreement

  • A temporary agreement was established on May 12, 2025, whereby the U.S. cut tariffs on Chinese goods from 145% to roughly 30%, while China reduced tariffs on U.S. imports to 10%.
  • This interim accord aimed to relax tensions in the trade war, providing a 90-day window for further negotiations[1][3].

Current Tensions

  • Despite this agreement, tensions persist. The U.S. claims that China has breached the May 12 accord by withholding specific exports, such as rare earth minerals. Meanwhile, China accuses the U.S. of sabotaging the agreement by imposing new export controls on AI chips and threatening to revoke Chinese student visas[1].
  • The U.S. Court of International Trade has invalidated many of the Trump administration's tariffs, arguing that they were enacted without proper legislative authorization. This legal challenge introduces uncertainty into future trade negotiations[2].
  1. The ongoing trade conflict between the U.S. and China raises concerns about the implementation of community policy and employment policy, as the tension could lead to further economic instability and job losses.
  2. The political landscape, marked by the trade skirmishes between the two superpowers, is a factor in the general-news cycle, with the evolving situation having significant implications for both domestic and international employment policies.
