Angry Victims' Group Ready to Talk to President Mazón

The feisty Association of Damaged by the Dana Horta Sud-Valencia has decided to give a ear-full to President Carlos Mazón, meeting with him in a town within the so-called no man's land. As a condition, they've made it clear that both this group and other victim associations should be included in the Investigation Commission of the Valencian Parliament.

The group announced their plans following a meeting in Paiporta last Friday, during which they discussed, among other things, the proposal for a meeting between representatives of the Association and the head of the Consell.

Mazón finally reaches out on May 23rd

Previously uncontacted for almost seven months, Mazón finally reached out with a proposal to chat with the three biggest victim associations about the disastrous October 29th, 2024 event.

Now, and with a majority vote, the Association of Damaged by the Dana Horta Sud-Valencia has agreed to the meeting, under the condition that the association had already invited Mazón to visit the no man's land, so they propose a meeting in a town within the zone, between group representatives and President Carlos Mazón along with his cabinet members he deems appropriate.

Mazón agrees to chat with the victims, who want a say in the Investigation Commission

The meeting, the group notes, will occur only after they and other victim associations are part of the Investigation Commission taking place in Les Corts Valencianes. They've requested the assistance of the media for the meeting, although the details will be finalized later with the Generalitat.

They inform Mazón's team of their decision

Furthermore, the group has informed Mazón's team of their decision, waiting for confirmation of his attendance before refining their list of topics and requests for the meeting.

On May 25th, the Popular Party announced plans to invite all victim and affected associations to appear in the commission, intending to avoid closed lists that exclude some organizations.

The work plan approved in May by PP and Vox includes invitations for 85 people, including President Pedro Sánchez and Carlos Mazón, as well as several ministers, former consellers, mayors, and representatives from security forces and organizations involved in managing the event. The commission has a timeline to receive documentation, allowing for additional requests or forsaking previous requests as needed.

The PP will include all victim associations in the investigation commission of Les Corts

A 20-working-day deadline was established for document submission, with the ability to add or remove requests as the process progresses.

Pedro Sánchez meets with victims' associations

On May 22nd, Pedro Sánchez, the President of the Government, met with the main victim associations in Valencia, seven months after the disaster. During the meeting, Sánchez promised to organize a state funeral in Valencia for the victims and announced investments for water management in affected areas like the ravines of Poyo, Gallego, and La Saleta, with the aim of preventing future floods.

He also assured victims' associations would be allowed to participate in the investigative commission on the disaster to be set up in Congress and vowed to continue meetings with the victims, even visiting "ground zero" to monitor the situation closely.

  1. The Association of Damaged by the Dana Horta Sud-Valencia has set a condition for their meeting with President Carlos Mazón: they and other victim associations must be included in the Investigation Commission of the Valencian Parliament.
  2. In response to the Association's conditions, President Pedro Sánchez's party, the Popular Party, has announced plans to invite all victim and affected associations to appear in the commission, aiming to avoid closed lists that exclude some organizations.
  3. As the general news unfolds, crime-and-justice concerns also seem to intertwine with politics and policy-and-legislation, as both President Sánchez and President Mazón are actively engaging with victims' associations and fair war-and-conflicts resolution in the aftermath of the disastrous October 29th, 2024 event.
