The staggering impact of the catastrophic glacier collapse that ravaged the Swiss village of Blatten might exceed hundreds of millions of francs, as per government estimations. In the initial phase, the government will offer a five-million-francs (5.3 million euros) relief fund via a legislation draft, confirmed Swiss President Karin Keller-Sutter. The canton of Wallis is additionally providing ten million francs as immediate aid [4].

"The predicament for the folks who've lost their possessions is intolerable," said Environment Minister Albert Rösti, expressing the need for both emotional and financial support. Farmers have lost their farms, entrepreneurs their hotels, and workers their jobs. Uncertainty looms as to whether and when the mountain could potentially slide again, Rösti noted [5].

The disaster, occurring at the end of May, involved a massive ice, rock, and debris avalanche. Despite the preliminary evacuation of the 300 residents of Blatten, a 64-year-old shepherd, seemingly staying outside the restricted area, remains unaccounted for. The debris cone on the village reaches up to 100 meters in certain spots [4].

Pondering over the idea of relocating the village to a safer zone, Rösti mentioned, "Our goal is to forge a future for the Loetschental community. Rebuilding the valleys is not an option for us." Ultimately, it's the community's decision whether to accept the proposed new location, as the mountain, in a grim twist, has claimed Blatten [5].
