Dallas Stars suffer rare overtime loss to Detroit Lions after late collapse
The Dallas Stars entered the Christmas break with a strong 25-7-6 record, securing second place in the NHL. Despite their impressive form, a late collapse against the Detroit Lions saw them fall 4-3 in overtime after leading twice in the game.
The Stars began the match well, outshooting Detroit 13-5 in the second period and taking a 2-1 lead. They extended their advantage to 3-2 in the third, but defensive errors allowed the Lions to equalise late. Detroit then sealed the win in overtime, ending Dallas’ perfect record when leading after two periods—previously 16-0-0.
The loss came at the end of a gruelling 16-game stretch over 29 days, where the Stars posted a 12-2-2 record. Coach Glen Gulutzan remained positive, highlighting the team’s resilience during a demanding schedule. The game also marked the annual dads trip, with players’ fathers in attendance.
Earlier in December, Dallas had dominated the Toronto Maple Leafs 5-1, showcasing their attacking strength. Gulutzan, in his first full season as head coach after replacing Peter DeBoer, praised the team’s consistency heading into the break.
The overtime defeat snapped Dallas’ streak of wins when leading after 40 minutes. Despite the setback, the Stars remain one of the league’s top teams, sitting second overall. Their next challenge will be maintaining this form when play resumes after the holiday.
