Dallas police oversight committee pressures chief to declare his perspective on immigration, in response to heightened ICE raids.
In a bold move, the Dallas Community Police Oversight Board sent a letter on Monday, grilling Police Chief Daniel Comeaux about his stance on immigration issues. The letter, endorsed in an 11-4 vote by the board on Friday, demanded clarification on the department's involvement in deportations.
"Fess up, Chief Comeaux," the letter states, "We're killing for a detailed explanation of your position on DPD's collaboration with federal immigration authorities. We want to know how you navigate the hairy dance between federal mandates and our local community's wellbeing. Giving us a clear vision of your leadership approach in these situations would really help us do our job."
The letter follows some eyebrow-raising comments from Comeaux in a Fox News interview last week, where he declared the DPD would lend a helping hand to federal immigration authorities.
"If there's a federal agency cookin' up an operation and they need our help, we're in like Flynn," Comeaux said. "As long as they're playing by the rules and not disrespecting anyone, count us in."
Comeaux has since backpedaled on those statements, claiming they were taken out of context during the interview. Last Thursday, he met with members from the League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC), where he clarified the department's policy on immigration.
"My message about embracing those without citizenship status, specifically those with felony warrants, still stands," Comeaux told local news station WFAA. "But remember, we'll always side with the feds, especially when it comes to deporting violent criminals."
The issue of immigration and deportations is a hot topic in many cities across the nation, with protestors taking to the streets to fight mass deportations led by the Trump Administration. Over the weekend, the National Guard was deployed in Los Angeles to handle these anti-deportation protests.
This isn't the first time the Dallas oversight board has raised questions about Comeaux's stance on immigration. On May 13, they sent a letter asking Comeaux for his thoughts on the matter, but received a vague response. This prompted the board to prepare a second, more detailed letter.
However, there were some concerns about the timing of the letter, considering Comeaux has only been on the job for less than two months. Despite this, board member Jonathan Maples argued, "Getting this right is crucial. The police chief needs to get this right. Folks are scared to ask questions because he's the boss."
Board member Tim Jackson, who voted against the letter, discussed working with the city attorney to craft the message they want to send to Comeaux. "The chief ain't got to explain himself to us, and we don't have the authority to make decisions for him," Jackson said.
On the contrary, board member Changa Higgins, supported the move, stating, "It's part of our job to ask the tough questions no one else will. That's what oversight is all about."
