Title Defense Burst: Gottschalk Ends Dakar - Dakar Rally champions withdraw over lingering injury risks in 2026
Timo Gottschalk and Yazeed Al-Rajhi have withdrawn from the 2026 Dakar Rally due to health concerns. The defending champions were forced to abandon their title defense after a series of setbacks. Their exit follows months of recovery from serious injuries sustained earlier this year.
The pair’s struggles began in April 2026, when a crash during the Baja Jordan Rally left both with spinal compression fractures. Gottschalk underwent surgery in Murnau, Bayern, under Dr. Wolfgang Nörenberg to stabilize his back. Though his recovery is nearly complete, screws inserted during the procedure are still in place and set for removal later this year.
Their 2026 Dakar campaign started poorly, with significant time lost on the opening stage. The situation worsened on the fourth stage when tire damage forced them out of contention. Despite their proven speed—demonstrated in their 2025 victory—the duo prioritized long-term health over continuing the race. Gottschalk and Al-Rajhi have now shifted focus to a full recovery and a strong return in future rallies.
The withdrawal marks the end of their 2026 Dakar Rally challenge. With Gottschalk’s surgery behind him and ongoing rehabilitation, both aim to regain full fitness. Their next steps will center on preparing for a comeback in upcoming competitions.
