Daily updates from Denmark: News highlights on a Wednesday

Denmark is taking part in a humanitarian aid airdrop operation over Gaza, coordinated by Jordan and the United Arab Emirates. This joint international effort aims to alleviate critical shortages in the region, where aid distribution has been severely restricted and famine risks are rising.

The operation, which involves C-130 aircraft, will deliver relief supplies to Gaza. The Danish Foreign Minister, Lars Løkke Rasmussen, has confirmed Denmark's participation in this mission. The exact size of Denmark's contribution has not been disclosed.

This coordinated mission took place on August 17, 2025, with multiple countries participating, including Denmark, alongside Jordan, Germany, UAE, Belgium, France, Italy, the Netherlands, and Indonesia. This joint effort delivered approximately 106 tons of food and relief supplies as part of a broader series of over 350 airdrops conducted by the Royal Jordanian Air Force and partners since late July 2025, totaling around 772 tons of aid delivered in this campaign.

Despite its humanitarian intent, the Foreign Minister acknowledged that airdropping is "by no means an optimal way to deliver emergency aid." However, due to the complicated and constrained access conditions on the ground, this method is currently the only viable option.

In other news, FC Copenhagen, a Danish football club, made headlines with a resounding 5-0 victory over Malmö FF in the Champions League qualifier. The match took place in Copenhagen, with Mohamed Elyounoussi, FC Copenhagen's attacker, stating that they knew they were the better team and let their performance speak for itself.

However, it was not all positive news in Denmark. Reports have emerged that one in three shops in Denmark sells alcohol and cigarettes to underage buyers, according to inspections by the Danish Safety Technology Authority. The practice was found to be unlawful, and the fees charged to foreign couples for getting married in Copenhagen were also found to be unlawful and must be returned.

Approximately 12,000 couples since 2018 have been charged these fees by Copenhagen Municipality, and the cost to the municipality of refunding the fees will be close to 23 million kroner. These revelations have sparked calls for reform and increased scrutiny of business practices in Denmark.
