Today's Wordle Etymology

The word "phrase" emerged from Middle English "fixen," a southern dialectal variation of "fox" with a feminine ending. As time went by, the v- sound developed, and originally, "phrase" simply meant "female fox," with the sense of a muttered complaint or spiteful woman developing later.
