Sheridan Troopers Advance to Wyoming Legion Baseball AA State Tournament Championship Game
The Sheridan Troopers Legion Baseball team is one step closer to claiming the state title, having advanced to the championship game of the 2025 Wyoming Legion Baseball AA State Tournament. The tournament, held at Powers Field in Cheyenne from July 28 to August 1, features eight teams in a modified double-elimination format.
The Troopers kicked off their tournament run on July 28 with a 6-0 victory over the Laramie Rangers. As the tournament progresses, elimination games will lead to a final championship round where the winners bracket team faces a losers bracket team. If the winners bracket team wins the Day 4 game, the losers bracket team must win twice on Day 5 to claim the championship. If the winners bracket team loses on Day 4, the championship game becomes a single winner-take-all game on Day 5.
In their upcoming game, the Troopers will face Casper today at 6:30pm. For Casper, this game is an elimination game, as they risk being knocked out of the tournament with a loss. If the Troopers lose today, they will play the winner of the Cheyenne/Gillette game tomorrow at 11am, in a 1-game winner take all championship. If they win, they will play the Cheyenne/Gillette winner for the championship at 11am the next day.
Meanwhile, the Denver Broncos are gearing up for their pre-season, set to start one week from August 9th, at San Francisco. The regular season for the Broncos begins on September 7th, at home vs. Tennessee. The University of Wyoming marching band will perform during halftime of the Denver Broncos' home opener against Tennessee.
Elsewhere in baseball, the Colorado Rockies lost 2 out of 3 games at Cleveland, with a 5-zip loss in the last game. They have an upcoming 6-game homestand, starting with 3 games against Pittsburgh, followed by 3 games against Toronto. The Major League Baseball trade deadline has passed, and Colorado traded relief pitcher Tyler Kinley to Atlanta, in exchange for minor leaguer Austin Smith.
Blaine Phillips had a standout performance for the Troopers in their last game, going 2 for 3 at the plate, with 3 RBI's, including a 2-run go-ahead double in the 5th inning. Griffen Switzenberg pitched a complete game for the Troopers, allowing 2 runs, 5 hits, and striking out 5.
