University of Wyoming Football Gears Up for Season Opener Against Akron
The University of Wyoming Cowboys are preparing for their season opener against Akron on August 28th, with a focus on improvement and adjustment as highlighted by head coach Jay Sawvel. The team has been in full pads, practicing hard during fall camp, with the aim of making improvements before the big game.
Coach Sawvel has emphasized that the game plan may require some adjustments as the team gets closer to the game. The Cowboys enter the season with a solid foundation on offense, with key players like quarterback Kaden Anderson, All-Mountain West tight end John Michael Gyllenborg, and top wide receivers such as Jaylen Sargent returning.
Meanwhile, the defense expects some changes with multiple transfers competing for roles alongside talented returners. The team aims to maintain a strong third-down defense, as seen last season. Preparing for Akron, Coach Sawvel aims to leverage this experienced core to improve in key areas before kickoff.
Akron, coached by Joe Moorhead, features leaders like senior WR Myles Walker and junior DL Julien Laventure, both wearing the No. 1 jersey for their leadership roles. The Cowboys will likely prepare strategically against these standout Akron players to limit their impact.
Akron finished last season with a 4-8 record and a 3-5 record in the Mid-American Conference. Unfortunately, they will not be participating in any post-season play this year due to a 1-year ban by the NCAA.
Elsewhere, the Colorado Rockies were swept at home by Toronto in a 3-game series, with the Blue Jays outscoring the Rocks 45-6 and outhitting them 63-20. The AA Northwest Regional Tournament started yesterday in Billings, Montana, with the Gillette Roughriders defeating Anchorage, Alaska 22-3 in the first game. The 2-time defending Montana State Champs from Missoula will play in the tournament today.
In other sports news, the Colorado baseball team will start a 6-game road trip tomorrow, with 3 games at Arizona, followed by 3 at St. Louis. The A-League Northwest Regional Tournament also started today in Burley, Idaho, with the Wyoming Champ Lovell Mustangs playing the host team in the last game of the day at 7:30pm.
Tomorrow is an off day on the Colorado Rockies' schedule. The first game for the Cowboy football team is on August 28th against Akron at 5 p.m. Mountain Time.
Despite focusing on American football, Coach Sawvel might still need to adjust the game plan to counter Akron's strengths, particularly their standout players Myles Walker and Julien Laventure.
With NCAA football barring Akron from post-season play this year, the University of Wyoming Cowboys aim to capitalize on this opportunity against the Zips, looking to make an impressive season opener on August 28th.
