Taking on Today's Strands Puzzle

I believe the puzzle revolves around words associated with play—perhaps you'll find weekly puzzle equipment on the board. I spot "ACTOR" across the bottom, but it's not a theme word. I also see WATCH, TOLL, ATOLL, HATCH, SEAT, and SEAL, but none of these match the theme words. Let's move on to a hint! ?

I find HALO. ? Now I need another hint. ?

I uncover FALLOUT. ? It seems like video game titles.

Here's the spangram: VIDEOGAMES. ☠️

UNCHARTED is hidden in the upper left corner. ?

I'm almost there with "FARCRY", but it doesn't quite fit.

Ah, I see "CRAFT"—that's probably "STARCRAFT" or "WARCRAFT", right? Hmm, not likely! I think it's "MINECRAFT". ?

Lastly, OVERWATCH. ?

How to Play Strands

You can play Strands on the NYT website and within the NYT Games app.

Upon starting, you'll see a game board filled with letters, accompanied by a clue that suggests the puzzle's theme (like "Stranger Things"). Your objective is to locate hidden words fitting the puzzle's theme.

A Crossword and Word Search Hybrid

The most crucial word to uncover is the "spangram," clarifying the puzzle's theme. For example, the spangram for the puzzle with the theme "Stranger Things" is "UPSIDE_DOWN." The spangram spans the entire board, traveling in any direction (up, down, left, right, or diagonal). Uncovering the spangram usually makes the rest of the puzzle much easier.

In addition to directions, words in Strands can connect diagonally as well. You'll only use each letter once, and there's only one correct solution. Whenever you successfully identify a word (like "KOMBUCHA," "MISO," or "KIMCHI"), it'll be highlighted in blue.

If you need help with the puzzle, you can submit any non-theme words (minimum four letters) to earn a hint credit. Once you've submitted three non-theme words, the "Hint" button becomes clickable. By clicking it, all letters in one of the theme words will be highlighted. You'll still need to connect the highlighted letters in the correct order to create one of the theme words. If a hint has already been revealed, and you use another one, the order of the letters will be shown.

How to Win Strands

Unlike other NYT games such as Connections and Wordle, you can't lose Strands. The solved letters will simply shake back and forth, indicating that your word is too short or not valid. You won't run out of guesses, and there's no time limit.

Winning Strands happens when you've used all the letters on the board, meaning you've found the spangram and the theme words. Upon completing the puzzle, you'll see a shareable card demonstrating your performance for the day: dots indicate the hidden theme words you discovered, the yellow dot displays when you found the spangram, and a lightbulb indicates words you received a hint for.
