I'd wager the word to focus on is "fancy." Let's get our eyes peeled for SNAZZY, and appreciate the shine with OOHSHINY. That'll point us in the right direction.

GAUDY is our first find...yep.

X might've been a part of EXOTIC, but that ain't workin' out. I have an idea for OOHSHINY ... that makes it easy to spot EXTRAVAGANT.

LAVISH is another obvious one.

We have a few stubborn letters left. I can slap together EXUDE, but that ain't a theme word.

Hey, there's ORNATE! Yep, that fits well.

Lastly, DELUXE.

Ready to play Strands? Hitch up your reins!

You can find Strands on the New York Times website and in the NYT Games app.

Upon starting a game, you'll see a board crammed with letters, flanked by a clue that points to the board's theme (i.e., "Better with age"). Your assignment is to locate the hidden words on the board that follow the puzzle's theme.

The spangram is the most important word to spot. It's a word that more plainly states the puzzle's theme (e.g., FERMENTED for a puzzle with the theme "Better with age"). The spangram runs across the entire board, either vertically or horizontally (hence the name). Spying the spangram should make the rest of the puzzle a cinch.

In Strands, words can scurry in any direction (up, down, left, right, and diagonally), and you only get to use each letter once. The only correct solution is the one and only way to solve the puzzle. If you're stuck, you can submit any non-theme words (minimum of four letters) for hint credit. If you submit three non-theme words, the "Hint" button will turn clickable; upon clicking, one of the theme words' letter order will be highlighted for you. You'll still need to set those letters in the appropriate order to create the theme word.

Can you conquer Strands?

Unlike Connections and Wordle, you can't fail at Strands. When you make submissions, you'll either correctly identify an answer, receive hint credit, or the text will shimmy back and forth to indicate that the word you submitted is too short or invalid. There's no limit on guesses, and there's no time limit.

You win when all letters on the board have been used, meaning you've identified the spangram and all theme words. Upon solving the puzzle, you'll be rewarded with a shareable card that demonstrates your performance for the day: blue dots indicate theme words you found, a yellow dot signifies the spangram, and a lightbulb represents words for which you received a hint.
