How I sussed out today's Strands

The puzzle theme may hint at evolution, or items with links, like jewelry, chains, or even meat.

I spotted SALAMI on the bottom left. It's a hit! 🔵 Meat it is!

Daily New York Times Presents Cryptic Answers and Clues for Saturday, May 10, 2025

KIELBASA looms up top o' SALAMI. 🔵

SAUSAGE is a non-theme word, but remember, the spangram is SAUSAGES. 🟡

CHORIZO rests under the spangram. 🔵

ANDOUILLE starts on the upper left. 🔵

Lastly, LIVERWURST. 🔵

Play Style: Strands

Search for the Strands game on the New York Times website or within the NYT Games app.

When startin' a game, you'll see a board with scrambled letters, accompanied by a clue hintin' at the puzzle's theme (like "Better with age"). Ya need to find hidden words that fit the board's theme.

The prime focus is the "spangram," the word that explicitly explains the puzzle's theme. (For example, the spangram for a puzzle with the theme "Better with age" is FERMENTED.) The spangram will extend across the entire board, either left to right or top to bottom (hence the name). When ya find the spangram, it'll be highlighted in yellow. Solving the spangram usually makes the remainder of the puzzle a breeze.

In Strands, words can travel in any direction (up, down, left, right, or diagonally) and will use each letter only once. There's only one correct solution. When ya correctly identify one of the puzzle's words (like KOMBUCHA, MISO, or KIMCHI), it'll light up in blue.

If ya get stuck, ya can submit any non-theme words (as long as they're four letters or more) to earn credit towards a single hint. If ya submit three non-theme words, the "Hint" button becomes clickable; if ya click it, all of the letters in one of the theme words will illuminate. Ya still gotta put those highlighted letters together to form a theme word. If there's already a hint on the board and ya use another hint before solving for that word, that word's letter order will be revealed.

How to win Strands

Unlike Connections and Wordle, ya can't "lose" Strands. While submitting guesses, ya'll either correctly identify a solution, earn credit towards a hint, or see the text shake back and forth when ya enter a word that's too short or invalid. Ya can't exhaust yer guesses, and there's no time limit.

Ya win when ya've used all the letters on the board, meaning ya've found the spangram and all the theme words. Like other NYT games, upon completion, ya'll see a sharable card that shows ya how ya performed during that round: blue dots 🔵 indicate theme words ya found, the yellow dot 🟡 indicates when ya found the spangram, and a lightbulb 💡 indicates words that ya received a hint for.
