Daily New York Times Compact Crossword Solutions for Thursday, 29th May: Clues and Responses
If you overlooked yesterday's NYT Mini Crossword puzzle, you can find the solutions provided here:
The NYT Mini is a condensed version of the newspaper's well-established larger crossword. Generally, there are between three and five clues in each direction across a five-by-five grid, but sometimes the puzzles are larger, especially on Saturdays.
Unlike its larger counterpart, the NYT Mini crossword is freely accessible on the New York Times website or NYT Games app. However, you'll need an NYT Games subscription to access previous puzzles in the archives.
The NYT Mini offers a quick daily diversion that usually takes little time to complete. I aim to finish the weekday grid in under a minute; yet, sometimes I get stumped on one or two clues and require the answer reveal.
To help you avoid the same issue, here are the answers to the NYT Mini Crossword for Wednesday, May 28 (spoilers ahead, of course):
ACROSS
- Tongue spoken in Bangkok – THAI
- Popular brand of athletic shoes – ASICS
- Language family that includes Swahili – BANTU
- Tongue from which we derive "pajama" and "khaki" – URDU
- Small serving of Manhattan – SIP
DOWN
- Ancient Russian rulers – TSARS
- Tongue used by over 300 million people, coming third after English and Mandarin – HINDI
- Act up – ACTUP
- School near Des Moines – ISU
- A (unspecified) of Abu Dhabi – ABU'
This language-heavy puzzle presents a considerable challenge for those familiar with terminology from BANTU, URDU, and HINDI. I, ironically, failed to remember the correct spelling of ASICS, since I thought it definitely contained an "E." Admittedly, I reside in the Big Ten region but missed identifying ISU. The most adorable clue was the Manhattan one, as I tried various three-letter NYC terms, including eventually "tip." A tough puzzle indeed!

The next NYT Mini Crossword puzzle you might encounter could offer NYT Mini hints and answers for books, entertainment, and languages, similar to the one you saw yesterday. To help you quickly solve these, here are two sample clues:
- Popular book series set in a dystopian future – DIVERGENT
- Literary award presented by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences – OSCAR
Enjoy a swift, entertaining challenge, and remember, even experts can get stumped!
