Chloe Kim's Journey to Olympic Gold
Chloe Kim, the American snowboarding sensation, has cemented her place in the history books with her impressive performances at the Winter Olympics.
In 2016, Kim made her mark as the first American female snowboarder to win a gold medal at the Winter Youth Olympic Games. This was just a taste of what was to come.
Kim's dedication to her sport is evident in her training routine. She rises at 7am each day and spends two hours on snow drills, which increases to six hours as the Olympics approach. Her training includes physical therapy and stability work, as well as light recovery exercises such as cycling and core work after snowboarding practice.
During the summers, Kim works out in the gym to strengthen her body and reduce injury risk. This rigorous regime focuses on exercises that build strength and agility necessary for competitive snowboarding.
Kim's diet supports her intense training demands and recovery. She drinks plenty of water and limits sugary foods and drinks to maintain optimal fitness and energy levels for her sport. Her meals vary based on her mood, but can include fast food such as In-N-Out or Chipotle for dinner, and a hearty breakfast of chocolate pancakes, biscuits and gravy, toast, and cottage cheese.
Kim's journey to the top began when she was just four years old. Her father, Jong Jin, an immigrant from Korea, took her to Mammoth Mountain Ski Area to practice snowboarding. Kim's hard work and talent paid off when she came in second in the superpipe at the 2014 Winter X Games and won gold the next year, becoming the youngest gold medallist at the time.
In 2018, Kim made history again by winning the women's halfpipe at the Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang, South Korea, at the age of 17, making her the youngest woman to do so in snowboarding. Kim's favorite memory from her Olympic wins was seeing her family after the competition, particularly her father who had sacrificed much to support her dream.
Kim's parents have been a constant source of support throughout her career. Jong Jin even quit his engineering job to dedicate all his time to helping his daughter realize her dream. Kim credited her parents for their commitment and sacrifices in an interview with InStyle.
Kim returned to the Olympic stage in 2022, where she successfully defended her title by winning the women's halfpipe at the Beijing Winter Olympics, becoming the first woman in history to win two gold medals in that event.
