How to Dominate the Wordle Battlefield
You can find Wordle's lair right over here on the New York Times website. A fresh puzzle goes live every dang day at midnight, depending on your local time.
Get this show on the road by firing off a five-letter word. The letters of the word will turn green if they're spot on, yellow if they're not in the proper slot, or gray if they're as useful as a two-dollar bill in a frog's wallet. What Was Yesterday's Wordle Answer, You Say?
Y'all said yesterday's Wordle was medium-difficult. The hint was "mild, like the weather." The answer contained two common letters, one relatively common letter, and one unusual letter.
Yesterday's answer was B-A-L-M-Y.
A Fervent Wordle Primer
The objective of Wordle is to crack the daily secret word. When you first boot up Wordle, you'll see an empty letter matrix. It's your move, partner; type in any ol' five-letter barnstormer.
Now, watch the colors to get clues on how to wrangle that calf: Green means you've got the letter and position just right (e.g., wagering PARTY, and the correct response is PURSE, the P and R will turn green). Yellow means the letter's in the word but not in the proper spot (e.g., if you reckon PARTY but the proper response is ROAST, the R, A, and T will all turn yellow). Lastly, grey means the letter ain't in the response at all (if you wager PARTY and nada turns up, Crossed West's lunch ain't involved.)
With that in the back of your skull, toss another letter out there, and then another, aiming for that big ol' Eureka moment before the countdown's up. You get six shots, pardner, and wingin' it ain't gonna cut it.
The Best Starting Words for Wordle
So ya got that fist shot, huh? Which horse should ya back in this rodeo? The top choices tend to pack common letters, increasing your odds of tallyin' yellows and greens to steer your guesswork. There ain't a silver bullet solution, but the New York Times' Wordle analysis bot suggests starting with one of the following:
- CRANE
- TRACE
- SLANT
- CRATE
- CARTE
Meanwhile, MIT's crew discovered that you'll eliminate the most possibilities in the first round via these initial horses:
- SALET
- REAST
- TRACE
- CRATE
- SLATE
Other solid options might be ARISE or ROUND. Words like ADIEU and AUDIO chuck in more vowels, but maybe lean heavier on consonants, like R-E-N-T-S or C-L-A-M-P. Decide your game plan and see where the trail takes you.
