All about Wordle basics
The goal of Wordle is to uncover the day's secret word. When you first open the Wordle game, you'll see a blank board of letters awaiting your move. Your task? Compose your own move, and:
- Green means your letter is correct and in the proper spot.
- Yellow signals that the letter is correct but in a different spot.
- Gray let's you know the letter doesn't appear in the solution word at all.
Make your guess, learn from the colors, and try again! You get six chances, and then it's sayonara.
The finest starting Words for Wordle
What's the best way to begin? Renting it? Perhaps. The finest choices generally contain common letters to increase the chances of yellow and green squares to guide your guesses. There's no one-size-fits-all start, but the New York Times's Wordle analysis bot suggests starting with one of these:
- CRANE
- TRACE
- SLANT
- CRATE
- CARTE
If you'd rather go with a study from MIT, the finest outset words to eliminate possibilities in the first round include:
- SALET
- REAST
- TRACE
- CRATE
- SLATE
Other strong bets might be ARISE or ROUND. Words like ADIEU and AUDIO contain more vowels, which may lean you towards using consonants as your emphasis, like RENTS or CLAMP. Choose your strategy and see how it plays out.
Wordle strategy secrets
We have guides aplenty to Wordle strategy, so if you're all in, take a peek:
- Consonant mastery details how to make the most of your consonants.
- Need more common letters? Try our strategy focused on the most common letters.
- Our advanced guide presents a three-pronged approach to fish for clues while maximizing your chances of winning swiftly.
Serious players win at Wordle by utilizing their guesses to gather information about which letters are in the word. If you know that the word must end in -OUND, for instance, don't squander four guesses on MOUND, ROUND, SOUND, or HOUND; instead, combine those consonants and guess MARSH. If the H lights up in yellow, you'll know you've hit the nail on the head!
One more strategy tidbit: keep in mind that the original Wordle list used about 2,300 solution words. Since the game was acquired by the NYT, there's now an editor who hand-picks the solutions. Sometimes these are a tad tricky, like a word that wouldn't have made the original list, or a topical word. So stay on the lookout for possible themes!
Wordle alternatives
Still yearning for even more five-letter guessing games? Look no further! The top Wordle alternatives, ranked by difficulty, include:
- Wheeldle, to play one puzzle after another
- Dordle and Quordle, which ask you to play two (Dordle) or four (Quordle) puzzles simultaneously, using the same guesses. There's also Octordle, with eight puzzles, and Sedecordle, with sixteen!
- Waffle, to rearrange a jumbled grid of five-letter words
- Absurdle, which changes the solution after each guess, but needs to remain consistent with previous feedback. You'll need to strategically back it into a corner until there is only one possible word left; then, you'll unleash it upon the puzzle, and triumph!
- Squabble, to play Wordle against other people with a timer ticking
- Antiwordle, in which you avoid guessing the day's solution and are required to use any letters you incorrectly guessed. The longer it takes you to win, the better you are at the game.
