Czech Vice-minister joins counter-government demonstration in Bratislava
In a series of events that have raised questions about diplomatic protocol, Czech Vice-Premier and Minister of Interior, Vit Rakusan, participated in a nationwide mass protest against the economic and pro-Russian policies of Slovakia's Prime Minister, Robert Fico, in Bratislava on September 16.
The report of these events was made by the CTK news outlet. The demonstration, which took place in 16 major cities, including Bratislava, was a significant show of dissent against Fico's policies. However, the exact nature of the demonstration in Bratislava where Rakusan participated was not specified.
Slovak Minister of Foreign Affairs, Juraj Blanar, conveyed a statement regarding Rakusan's presence at the protest, considering it as interference in Slovakia's internal affairs. Blanar further perceived Rakusan's actions as an abuse within the context of the ongoing electoral campaign in the Czech Republic.
In response to the criticism, Rakusan told CTK that he attended the event not as an official and did not interfere in Slovakia's political affairs. The Czech Ministry also explained that Rakusan was acting as a private individual.
The latest wave of protests was sparked by Fico's trip to China and his meeting with Russian dictator Vladimir Putin, as well as a recently approved package of harsh austerity measures by the government.
Meanwhile, Mikhail Simecka, the opposition leader, praised Rakusan's participation in the anti-government demonstration in Bratislava. In contrast, Blanar stated that this behavior does not contribute to a constructive Slovak-Czech dialogue.
Slovak Ambassador to Prague, Martin Muransky, expressed protest to the Czech Ministry of Foreign Affairs on September 18, following Rakusan's actions. The exact details of the meeting between Fico and Putin in China are not specified.
