Cyprus restricts Troodos mountain access amid snow and landslides

Ice, snowfall and falling rocks disrupt access to Cyprus' main mountain routes.

Road access to the Troodos mountains remains restricted on Wednesday morning, as snowfall, frost and landslides continue to affect large parts of the mountainous road network, according to the Cyprus Police.

As of around 10:30 am, only vehicles with four-wheel drive (4x4) or those equipped with snow chains are allowed to use the main roads leading to Troodos. The affected routes include:

  • Platres - Troodos
  • Karvounas - Troodos
  • Prodromos - Troodos
  • Pedoulas - Prodromos

Police said the road surface on these routes is extremely slippery due to ongoing snowfall and icy conditions, urging drivers to avoid unnecessary travel unless fully prepared.

At the same time, several landslides involving rocks and large volumes of soil have been recorded, further complicating traffic in the region. Roads affected by landslides include:

  • Kalopanagiotis - Moutoullas - Pedoulas
  • Kakopetria - Karvounas
  • Pedoulas - Kykkos - Kambos
  • Kykkos - Tsakkistra
  • Kambos - Orkonta - Kato Pyrgos

Drivers are advised to proceed with extreme caution, as debris may still be present on the roadway.

According to police updates, the roads Prodromos - Lemythou and Kakopetria - Pinewood - Pedoulas remain open to all vehicles. However, they are also slippery due to light snowfall and frost.

No significant problems have been reported on the rest of the road network in urban areas or on Cyprus motorways at this stage.

The Police have once again appealed to motorists to strictly follow the Highway Code and traffic signs, remain vigilant, and adjust their driving to winter conditions to prevent accidents.
