Cyprus extends financial assistance for Syrians to facilitate their return to their homeland, according to the country's Migration Minister.
Cyprus Unveils Financial Incentives for Syrian Refugees to Return Home
Cyprus has announced a new program to encourage Syrian refugees to return to their homeland. The program offers monetary assistance to facilitate the resettlement process, while allowing the primary income earner from each family to remain in Cyprus to work.
The program's key features include financial incentives for Syrian refugees to return home, with a one-off payment of €2,000 for adults and €1,000 for each child. This program will be open for applications between June 2 and August 31, 2025.
The family's main earner will also be eligible for a special residency and work permit, allowing them to stay in Cyprus for a minimum of two years and a maximum of three years. They will be permitted to travel back and forth to Syria during this time.
The Cypriot government believes that many Syrians wish to return and aid in rebuilding their country, particularly after the ousting of dictator Bashar al-Assad. However, concerns about the Syrian jobs market have prevented many from returning. The Cypriot program aims to alleviate these concerns by offering financial guarantees.
According to statistics from the Asylum Service, Syrian nationals make up the largest group of asylum-seekers in Cyprus, with over 4,200 applications in 2024 - nearly ten times as many as the second-largest group.
The program's success hinges on ensuring that returns are voluntary and safe. This is crucial, as any coercion or breach of human rights could tarnish the program's reputation and effectiveness.
Cyprus's efforts to manage migration are not limited to this new resettlement program. The Cypriot President, Christodoulides, has advocated for more migration deals with third countries, aiming to further address the issue of migration and asylum in the region.
This news marks a significant step towards helping refugees return to their homes, offering them financial support and work opportunities. The program's success will not only benefit the Syrian refugees but also contribute to the fragile post-war transition in Syria.
