Cyprus and Ireland Top 2026 List of Best Retirement Spots for Brits

A new report has ranked Cyprus and Ireland as the best destinations for UK retirees. The 2026 UK Retirement Destinations Attractiveness Report highlights factors like taxation, healthcare, and climate. Other countries, including Malta, Portugal, and Panama, also scored highly for their financial perks and quality of life. Cyprus and Ireland share the top spot due to their strong benefits for retirees. Cyprus offers flexible pension tax rules, no wealth or inheritance tax, and a warm Mediterranean climate. English is widely spoken there, making daily life easier for British expats. Nicosia, its capital, also boasts the highest annual sunlight in Europe, with 3,388 hours.

Ireland allows UK citizens to live, work, and retire without a visa under the Common Travel Area (CTA). This long-standing agreement simplifies relocation for British retirees seeking familiar surroundings.

Further down the list, Malta and Portugal attract retirees with their mild climates, low crime rates, and accessible healthcare. Both countries provide a relaxed lifestyle while maintaining strong public services.

Panama stands out for its financial advantages. The country's territorial tax system means only local income is taxed, while the Pensionado programme offers discounts on everything from medical care to entertainment. Mauritius also appeals to cost-conscious retirees, thanks to its 15% flat tax rate and reasonable living expenses.

Spain remains a popular choice for its well-regarded healthcare system and high safety ratings. Uruguay, meanwhile, offers political stability and a structured healthcare network, though British retirees must apply for permanent residency after an initial 90-day visa-free stay. Access to Uruguay's public health system requires registration with the social security institute and proof of income. The report highlights a mix of financial incentives, healthcare access, and lifestyle perks across the top destinations. Cyprus and Ireland lead the rankings, but other countries provide strong alternatives for UK retirees. Each location offers distinct advantages, from tax breaks to sunny climates and straightforward residency rules.
