Saxony-Anhalt's biking conditions remain a concern, as per the latest survey by the ADFC. While the declining trend has been halted, the region's bike-friendliness still lags behind the national average.

"It's high time for action in traffic safety," remarked Stephan Marahrens, chairman of the ADFC Saxony-Anhalt state board. The 2024 Bike Climate Test, a nationwide evaluation by the ADFC, incorporated responses from over 213,000 cyclists, including around 3,600 from Saxony-Anhalt. Unfortunately, Halle (Saale) and the state capital Magdeburg ranked near the bottom among cities with 200,000 to 500,000 inhabitants. Halle secured the 18th spot with a score of 4.2, while Magdeburg followed closely behind with a score of 4.34.

Safety is a crucial factor in promoting cycling, as Marahrens explained. "The perceived safety – that's the issue – has stagnated in Saxony-Anhalt." In 2022, three out of four cyclists expressed feeling unsafe while riding, a figure that hasn't improved. Drivers overtaking cyclists at dangerous distances is a major concern.

Despite these concerns, Marahrens sees a glimmer of hope. "The downturn, which was consistently present before, has now been stopped. That's a positive sign for us," he said. This indicates that change is happening at the municipal level, but further improvement is necessary.

The top spot in Saxony-Anhalt went to Dessau-Roßlau with a score of 3.6, followed by Bernburg (3.7), Merseburg, and Salzwedel (each 3.8). Zerbst continues to struggle at the bottom with a score of 4.6.

Insights:Despite the ongoing safety concerns, Saxony-Anhalt continues to invest in biking infrastructure as part of broader efforts to promote environmental sustainability and public health. However, the region's bike-friendliness still trails the national average. People often feel unsafe cycling due to factors such as inadequate infrastructure, poor road conditions, and drivers overtaking cyclists at dangerous distances. For more detailed insights into the specific concerns in Saxony-Anhalt based on the ADFC's 2024 Bike Climate Test, it's best to consult the ADFC's official reports or their website.

To enhance road safety and promote cycling, it may be beneficial for Saxony-Anhalt's community policy to prioritize vocational training for drivers on sharing roads safely with cyclists. Additionally, implementing improved biking infrastructure could contribute to increasing the region's vocational training opportunities related to sustainable transportation and public health.
