In the heart of Montreal, discussions about the future governance of Ville-Marie, which encompasses the city's downtown, are heating up. The mayoral candidates, Soraya Martinez Ferrada of Projet Montreal and Luc Rabouin of Ensemble Montreal, have put forth their proposals for the region.

Projet Montreal has confirmed that, if elected, the mayor of Montreal would continue to serve as the de facto mayor of Ville-Marie. However, Soraya Martinez Ferrada is open to the idea of creating a separate Ville-Marie mayor position, although she considers it a long-term priority. On the other hand, Craig Sauvé of Ensemble Montreal has proposed creating a specific mayor position for Ville-Marie.

Luc Rabouin, if elected, would make changes to the borough council. He plans to eliminate the two designated city councillor positions and create three borough councillor positions instead. This move, he believes, would establish a more significant presence on the ground. In contrast, Soraya Martinez Ferrada aims to ensure that itinerant people, who often face challenges in voting, have a smoother path to democracy. She suggests having street workers visit itinerant people to register them on the electoral list on the same day.

The issue of itinerant people voting has been a topic of discussion. Currently, they can vote using the address of a community organization in Montreal, according to Luc Rabouin. To further improve democracy, Soraya Martinez Ferrada proposes making it easier for itinerant people to vote.

The leaders of both Projet Montreal and Ensemble Montreal will participate in a second debate on Thursday, organised by the Montreal Council on International Relations (CORIM). The debate promises to shed more light on their proposals for Ville-Marie and the future of Montreal's governance.

The Mayor of Montreal also holds the power to propose the special position of the Mayor of Ville-Marie in the future. With the upcoming election, Montrealites will have the opportunity to decide which candidate's vision they support for the city and Ville-Marie.
