Richard Carapaz Targets Late-Season Races After Missing Vuelta a España

Former Olympic road race champion Richard Carapaz is setting his sights on the autumn racing season, following his withdrawal from the 2025 Vuelta a España due to illness. The Ecuadorian cyclist, who finished third at the Giro d'Italia in May and won a stage during the race, is now focusing on recovery and training, with his eyes on two major events: Il Lombardia and the UCI Road World Championships in Rwanda.

Carapaz's recovery from a gastrointestinal infection has been a stop-start process, forcing him to withdraw from the Tour de France and causing inconsistencies in his training. However, he is now nearly fully recovered and is dedicating himself to regaining top form for the upcoming races.

EF Education-EasyPost, Carapaz's cycling team, revealed this information in a statement. The riders who will race for the team at the Vuelta a España have not yet been announced.

The World Championships road race in Kigali, the Rwandan capital, which is 1,300 meters above sea level, features over 6,000 meters of altitude in 267.5km. The course suits climbers, and Carapaz, a stage winner at all three Grand Tours, sees this as a special opportunity for himself.

Carapaz finished second at the Vuelta a España in 2020, and the start list for the 80th edition of the race can be found with our start list. However, his focus this year is on the one-day events, such as Il Lombardia, and the World Championships, where he aims to maximise his performance as he regains fitness.

Carapaz is currently undergoing altitude training in Ecuador, a strategy that should help him prepare for the high-altitude race in Rwanda. This shift in focus from Grand Tour racing this year towards specific high-profile one-day events and the Worlds is a strategic move that reflects Carapaz's determination to return to the top of the cycling world.
