Cyclist Privitera regrettably passes away at the age of 19 following a crash at the Tour of the Aoste Valley-Mont Blanc in Italy.
In a tragic turn of events, the cycling world was left in mourning following the fatal accident of Italian junior cyclist, Samuele Privitera, during the first stage of the Tour of the Aoste Valley-Mont Blanc. The race, held in the picturesque northwestern region of Italy, near the French and Swiss border, was marred by the unfortunate incident.
The accident occurred approximately 32 to 35 kilometers from the finish line in Aosta, near the municipality of Pontey, on a downhill stretch of road. Privitera, a promising under-23 cyclist and a member of the Hagens Berman Jayco team, was in his second season with the US-based team.
Reports suggest that Privitera lost control of his bike, possibly due to hitting a speed bump or an uneven road surface. As a result, he crashed into a gate, suffering severe head trauma. His helmet came off during the impact, and despite immediate medical attention, he tragically passed away at the Parini Hospital in Aosta on Wednesday evening, July 16.
The second stage of the race was cancelled following Privitera's death, with a moment of remembrance scheduled to precede the resumption of the race with the third stage. The third stage will start from Pre Saint Didier and end at Col du Gran San Bernardo.
This unfortunate incident marks the third such tragedy in recent cycling events, with Andre Drege (Tour of Austria, 2021) and Gino Mader (Tour of Switzerland, 2023) also losing their lives at young ages. The race organisers, Societa Ciclistica Valdostana, made these announcements in their statement.
