Tour de France Femmes: Demi Vollering Crashes in Final Kilometers
In the ongoing Tour de France Femmes, a significant incident occurred in the third stage. Demi Vollering (FDJ-SUEZ) crashed in the final kilometers of the race, causing disruption that affected the outcome of the stage and the overall standings.
The crash happened with 3.6km to go on a right turn as the riders exited a bridge and the road narrowed on the approach to Angers. A number of riders touched wheels and crashed in multiple points, with Vollering hit at speed by another rider.
Despite the setback, Vollering managed to finish the stage, but was over six minutes behind the winner due to the five-kilometre crash rule in sprint stages. Lorena Wiebes (Team SD Worx-Protime) took the stage victory, while Kim Le Court-Pienaar (AG Insurance - Soudal Team) was slowed by the crash and was awarded the same time as the stage winner.
Marianne Vos (Team Visma-Lease a Bike), who currently leads the general classification, capitalised on the situation. Vos was second on the stage and so took the race lead thanks to time bonuses. She now leads by 2:37 minutes over Sarah Gigante, with Demi Vollering in third place, 3:18 minutes behind.
In the overall standings, Kasia Niewiadoma-Phinney (Canyon-Sram zondacrypto) is in first place, having won the 2024 Tour de France Femmes. She is currently three seconds ahead of Demi Vollering in the general classification.
