Cyclist aged 19 meets fatal end following fall during Giro del Valle race.
In a heart-wrenching turn of events, the Giro Valle d'Aosta, an exciting cycling race in Italy, has been shaken by the unfortunate demise of 19-year-old cyclist Samuele Privitera. Privitera was competing for the Hagens Berman Jayco development team when he suffered a tragic accident during the first stage on July 16, 2025, in the municipality of Pontey.
Privitera, a talented and vibrant member of his team, crashed while descending 32 kilometers from the finish. Despite immediate medical assistance and being transported to Ospedale Parini in Aosta, he sadly passed away. The cause of the accident is currently under investigation by public safety authorities.
The race organizers and sports directors have responded with sensitivity, implementing several measures to honour Privitera's memory. The second stage, scheduled for July 17 in Passy, has been canceled. The third stage, from Pré Saint Didier to Col du Gran San Bernardo on July 18, will proceed but with the first 40 km neutralized, meaning no competitive racing. The first mountain climb and the first sprint have been canceled, and a moment of silence will precede the third stage. All formal ceremonies for the event have been canceled. Furthermore, four ambulances and three doctors, including two resuscitators, will be present for the remainder of the race. All race prizes will be donated to Privitera's family. Teams are given the freedom to decide whether they want to continue participating after the incident.
The Hagens Berman Jayco team, who were competing with Portuguese riders Gonçalo Tavares and Daniel Moreira, have been deeply affected by the loss. Team owner Axel Merckx shared the news with a heavy heart, but did not reveal the team's plans for the Giro Valle d'Aosta. Merckx also emphasized Privitera's significant role within the team, describing him as the "life and personality" of the team, and stating that he will be irreplaceable.
Daniel Moreira, the recent Portuguese under-23 champion, is a rider for Hagen Berman Jayco, and Gonçalo Tavares is also a member of the team. The cycling community and fans alike are sending their condolences and support to Privitera's family, friends, and teammates during this difficult time.
