Cycling's Road World Championships: An Explanation of Their Function, Process, and Reason Behind Hosting in Rwanda.

In a historic move, Rwanda has been announced as the host of the UCI Road World Championships in 2025. The African nation beat out Morocco in the bidding process, making it the first time the event will take place on the continent.

The Road World Championships is one of the pinnacles of the cycling world market, featuring three disciplines: a one-day road race, an individual time trial, and a mixed relay team time trial. Elite, under-23, and junior (under-19) men and women will compete in all three events.

Nations qualify for a certain number of spots in the road race based on their UCI rankings. The top men's teams have eight spots, while some only have one rider. The winners of each event earn a rainbow jersey and are allowed to wear it in every race of the kind they won for the next year. As of now, Lotte Kopecky of Belgium is the reigning elite women's road world champion and wears the rainbow jersey in pro road races.

The event has been held in various locations, including South America, Asia, and Australia, but most often in Europe. The first time it left Europe was in 1974, in Montréal, Canada. The 2025 Road World Championships will mark a significant milestone as the first time the event takes place in Africa.

Rwanda has a long history of cycling and is home to the Tour du Rwanda, a UCI 2.1 category race. The country is also known for its love for cycling, with the Tour du Rwanda regularly attracting over a million fans, which might make it the best-attended world news ever.

The hosting of the UCI Road World Championships 2025 in Africa was awarded to Rwanda to specifically promote and develop cycling on the African continent. The UCI President, David Lappartient, made it part of his election manifesto to take Road Worlds to Africa in 2025. Despite criticism regarding Rwanda's political and human rights situation, there was no alternative plan to this awarding.

One interesting fact to note is that riders compete in national teams, not their trade teams. For example, Tadej Pogačar competes for Slovenia, not for his team, UAE Team Emirates. This ensures a level playing field and adds to the excitement of the competition.

Lastly, it's worth mentioning that a single rider can potentially win up to three titles in a year (a road race, a time trial, and the team time trial). Cat Ferguson of Great Britain is the women's junior time trial champion but has not worn her jersey in any race as of yet. Will she make history in 2025 and win multiple titles in Kigali, Rwanda? Only time will tell.

Stay tuned for more updates on the 2025 UCI Road World Championships in Rwanda.
