Cycling World in Limbo as Transfer Deadline Looms

The cycling world is abuzz with uncertainty as the 2025-2026 transfer season drags on. A proposed merger between Intermarché-Wanty and Lotto has left riders and teams in limbo, with the UCI's October 1 deadline looming. Meanwhile, Arkéa-B&B Hotels faces closure, threatening the futures of 54 WorldTour and women's team riders.

The potential merger of Intermarché-Wanty and Lotto has thrown the transfer market into disarray. With discussions ongoing since July, the timeline remains uncertain, affecting teams like Israel-Premier Tech and the current Lotto roster. Riders like Biniam Girmay and Eduardo Sepulveda face an uncertain future.

The protracted transfer season has seen 198 riders change teams, 518 remain with the same team, and 45 retire. Younger riders and domestiques have been disproportionately affected by the uncertainty. Some riders have resorted to joining lower-level teams or amateur outfits due to limited WorldTour options.

The UCI's maximum of 30 riders per WorldTour team could lead to excess riders being paid out but without a team. Arkéa-B&B Hotels' likely folding leaves 42 WorldTour riders and 12 women's team riders without contracts. The delays and uncertainty have weakened riders' bargaining positions.

With the UCI's deadline approaching, the cycling world awaits clarity on the Intermarché-Wanty and Lotto merger, and the fate of Arkéa-B&B Hotels. The uncertainty has disrupted the transfer market, affecting riders and teams alike, and highlighting the need for a more streamlined process.
