Cycling Team SD Worx-Protime succeeds in flipping the difficult Tour of Britain Women's race, with Wiebes triumphing in the concluding stage.
2025 Tour of Britain Women: Lorena Wiebes Triumphs in the Face of Adversity
Lorena Wiebes, SD Worx-Protime's powerhouse sprinter, set her sights on the overall classification of the 2025 Tour of Britain Women. However, crashes and misfortune plagued her journey, forcing her to fight tooth and nail just to keep her race alive. With an unyielding spirit, she snatched the final stage victory on Glasgow Green.
The GC battle raged on in the intermediate sprints between Ally Wollaston (FDJ-Suez) and Cat Ferguson (Movistar), leaving Wiebes clear of trouble. As the peloton charged towards the final lap, Wiebes unleashed a monstrous sprint, extending her record as the rider with the most wins in Tour of Britain Women history.
Stage two took a heavy toll on Wiebes, who suffered an injury to her hand resulting from a crash. The pain made her uncomfortable on her bike for the rest of the race. Initially, the European champion questioned if she would continue, but she rallied and persevered.
The team also endured a setback when lead-out rider, Barbara Guarischi, was involved in a massive crash on the third stage. Despite initial concerns, her injuries weren't as severe as initially feared.
Wiebes and her team managed to put the bad luck behind them in Glasgow, securing a characteristic bunch sprint win. "We really went into the stage to finish it in a good way," Wiebes told our website after the final stage. "It's been pretty much ups and downs... I felt pretty strong at the end and I'm happy that the sprint power was still there."
Wiebes also criticized the decision by UCI commissaires not to neutralize the race following the crash that took out Guarischi. She believed it would have been safer for the race to have been paused to allow for adequate medical personnel.
"I think it was a mistake from the commissaires to not neutralize the race after the big crash," she said. "If only three riders can get through and multiple riders are screaming on the ground in pain, I don't think it's good to continue the race like this."
Sport Director Christian Kos praised his team's display of tenacity on the final day. "It was necessary to go out with a bang because we didn't have the most lucky week... this is a nice lift up of the spirit."
Despite the misfortune that knocked Wiebes out of GC contention, Kos remains optimistic about her future as a formidable competitor in hilly stage races. "When we were looking at the stages we had the feeling it was not impossible to go for it."
