Taucha's cycling climate gets a thumbs-up from cyclists in the latest ADFC bike test, seeing significant improvements over the past couple of years. The test results were shared with the public on June 18. The public bike rental system gets top marks, yet 65% of locals still feel uneasy while pedaling. Mixed traffic with cars is perceived as a major danger by 81% of Taucha residents.
ADFC focused on road traffic harmony in this bike test, leaving room for improvement, as in many Saxon cities. Aggressive vibes in traffic and close calls with cars are common concerns, with 62% and 70% of respondents reporting such incidents, respectively. Conflicts with drivers are a regular issue for most locals (65%), while disagreements among cyclists take a back seat (only 28% report them frequently).
Taucha scores better than average in winter bike path maintenance, public biking ads, and the bike rental system, which 72% of respondents applaud. The overall evaluation of the bike climate test shows that most indicators are ranked much higher than two years ago.
Konrad Krause, ADFC Sachsen e.V. director, praises Taucha's city administration for its efforts, noting the positive feedback on the bike rental system. However, he stresses the need for continued growth in cycling promotion. Residents are not pleased with the pace of bike path construction, needing more enforcement against bike path parking violations, and fighting bike theft. Taucha also lags behind in one-way streets for cycling compared to the Saxon average.
The bike climate test is the largest global survey on cycling conditions, involving over 200,000 participants in every two years. In 2024, cyclists across the nation will have another opportunity to share their opinions on Taucha's cycling conditions, traffic climate, and bike infrastructure.
In this year's bike climate test, the focus was on traffic harmony. Other aspects considered included considerate driving, car overtaking distances, and disagreements among cyclists. Taucha's performance in these areas occasionally surpasses the national average.
In the overall rating of 3.81 out of 6, Taucha ranks 182nd among 423 cities with under 20,000 residents nationwide. Taucha holds the 9th position among the 39 participating Saxon cities.
