Cycling Distance and the Goldilocks Zone: Everesting Pioneer Discusses Extreme Rides and Advice for Beginners

In the world of cycling, a unique challenge has emerged that pushes riders to their limits - Everesting. This extraordinary endeavour, founded by Andy van Bergen, started as a small bike ride 11 years ago and has since grown into a global movement.

At the heart of Everesting's inception was van Bergen's love for mountaineering. This passion for conquering heights translated seamlessly into the creation of Everesting, a cycling event that requires participants to ascend the equivalent height of Mount Everest (8,848 metres) in a single activity.

The recommended gradient for Everesting is between 6% and 9%, although some daring cyclists have taken on the challenge on epic mountain cols. One such rider is Demonic Dan Vegan, who managed to complete the full altitude in a sub-40km ride on the 23% Bundarra Road in Marino, South Australia.

Vegan's record-breaking ride was not the only unconventional Everesting attempt. Ride on a unicycle has been completed during an Everesting, and two attempts have been made while wheelie'ing the entire way.

To allow for active recovery during descents, a shorter climb is advised for Everesting. This strategy ensures riders can maintain their pace and endurance throughout the gruelling challenge.

In 1994, George Mallory's grandson completed an Everesting attempt, demonstrating the appeal of the challenge across generations.

For those intrigued by the tales of Everesting derring-do, The Going Long podcast on the website offers captivating stories from various locations and methods. The podcast can be found on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, and all major podcast outlets.

Everesting and Hells 500, two cycling events created by van Bergen, have become synonymous with pushing cyclists to their limits. Both events have gained a cult following, attracting riders from around the world who are ready to take on the challenge.

Supporting fellow cyclists is a key aspect of the Everesting community. van Bergen himself supported Vegan during his Everesting attempt. The camaraderie and shared spirit of adventure make Everesting more than just a cycling challenge - it's a global movement that brings people together.
