Vuelta a Burgos 2022: Isaac Del Toro Secures GC Victory in Thrilling Final Stage

The final stage (Stage 5) of the Vuelta a Burgos 2022 was a nail-biting affair, with Giulio Ciccone (Lidl-Trek) clinching the stage win and Isaac Del Toro (UAE Team Emirates-XRG) securing the overall General Classification (GC) title.

The decisive queen stage concluded at Lagunas del Neila, a hors categorie climb with an average gradient of 9.1%. This steep ascent proved to be the decisive factor in the GC battle, with Ciccone showcasing a powerful uphill attack to claim victory, recording a time of 6.51 W/kg for the 4.2 km segment and finishing in approximately 14:35 on the climb section.

Del Toro, who had been in a lead duo with Afonso Eulalio (Bahrain Victorious) and García Pierna before the final ascent, held on to secure the GC title. The duo had a 25-second gap to the peloton, which was being aggressively driven by Decathlon AG2R La Mondiale in support of their GC leader Léo Bisiaux. However, García Pierna dropped out of the lead duo before the final ascent, leaving Del Toro and Ciccone to battle it out for the stage win.

The breakaway group, consisting of Nico Denz (Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe), Mathijs Paasschens (Bahrain Victorious), Carlos García Pierna (Burgos Burpellet BH), Samuele Zoccarato (Polti VisitMalta), Txomin Juaristi (Euskaltel-Euskadi) and Matteo Moschetti (Q36.5 Pro Cycling), disintegrated as the steepest sections of Lagunas del Neila approached.

In the end, Ciccone accelerated away from Del Toro on the final metres of the climb to win the stage, while Del Toro secured the GC title with his second-place finish. This marked Del Toro's third GC victory and ninth professional win in the 2025 season, although the results provided are largely from 2025 editions.

Lorenzo Fortunato (XDS Astana) finished second overall in Vuelta a Burgos, 19 seconds behind the winner. The final stage included three categorised climbs, apart from the decisive hors categorie climb at Lagunas de Neila. The breakaway group settled into a smooth pace and swept up the KOM points across the first two climbs - Alto del Cerro (5k at 3.8%) and Alto de Arroyo (3.3km at 5.2%).

The Vuelta a Burgos 2022 was a thrilling race, with Ciccone's stage win and Del Toro's GC victory providing a fitting climax to the event. The race demonstrated the high level of competition and the sheer determination of the riders, making it a must-watch for cycling fans worldwide.

Sports enthusiasts would marvel at the thrilling conclusion of the Vuelta a Burgos 2022, where Isaac Del Toro clinched the General Classification (GC) title, and Giulio Ciccone won the final stage. Despite a tough queen stage on Lagunas del Neila, a grueling hors categorie climb, Del Toro managed to secure his third GC victory in sports events of the 2025 season.
