Border Control Remains Unchanged, for Now: New Government's Plans Await Implementation

Customs and Immigration Inspections Maintain Routine Operations - Customs and immigration checks remain unaltered.

On the dawn of a new federal regime, there's no evident shift in border control measures. "We're carrying on as we always have," said Stefan Döhn, spokesperson for the Federal Police Inspectorate Trier, at a border patrol station along the A64 from Luxembourg. "We haven't received any updates. It's business as usual."

Alexander Dobrindt, the newly appointed Federal Interior Minister (CSU), had declared plans for reinforced migrant repatriations and enhanced external border controls. Initial decisions were slated for today.

Since mid-September 2024, border patrols resumed at all of Germany's external boundaries. In February, the federal government prolonged these border controls until 15 September.

Illegal Immigration Under Scrutiny

At the checkpoint near Trier, federal agents frequently flag down vehicles. Inside a large steel tent at the inspection area, documents undergo thorough examination. Typically, most can proceed. Daily, hundreds of vehicles pass through this site.

Federal police are targeting illegal border crossers, smugglers, and individuals with outstanding warrants. Döhn reported that key apprehensions have been made, and provided updated figures.

Over 2,600 Illegal Entries Recorded

A total of 2,661 illegal entries were reported in the states of Rhineland-Pfalz and Saarland during the border controls that ended in March. 1,694 individuals hailed from France, 843 from Luxembourg, and 124 from Belgium, according to the federal police. 1,166 people were sent back to France, 513 to Luxembourg, and 73 to Belgium. Approximately 56 smugglers were caught. Döhn noted that the March figures were still preliminary and might see minor adjustments. He asserted that the controls were "meaningful and highly effective."

The Road Ahead?

Expect a directive from the Federal Ministry of the Interior. "Then we'll reassess our strategy." The future holds uncertainties regarding additional transitions or increased personnel. However, Döhn assured they are ready and can initiate the order promptly. The checks are "extremely labor-intensive yet manageable," he added, with support from other units and inspectorates.

Controversy Arises

Fixed border checks are uncommon within the European Schengen area. In Rhineland-Pfalz, a checkpoint remains stationary along the A60 headed to Belgium. In Saarland, entry traffic from Luxembourg is managed at Perl, while that from France is controlled in Saarbrücken.

There's also criticism locally. Work commuters who travel from Germany to Luxembourg are annoyed by delayed crossings due to checkpoints. More than 50,000 German workers find employment in Luxembourg. The country lodged a complaint against the border control extension with the EU Commission in February.
