Current Traffic Conditions

In the bustling city of Astana, Kazakhstan, road safety has become a pressing concern. The Senior Assistant Prosecutor, Jassulan SARPEKOV, has expressed his worry over the current road situation.

The statistics for the first seven months of 2025 show a significant increase in the number of road traffic accidents and casualties. A total of 19 fatalities and 1307 injuries have been reported, with 353 cases involving minors - nearly triple the number in 2024 (123). Moreover, 414 road traffic accidents involving pedestrians have been recorded, resulting in 16 deaths and 1201 injuries.

The main cause of these accidents involving minors is carelessness and the lack of established safe behavior habits among children. Drivers, on the other hand, are the main cause of road traffic accidents in the capital, with 980 accidents occurring due to their negligence. Drivers under the influence pose a separate threat, with 13 such accidents recorded and 18 casualties.

In an effort to improve road safety, several preventive measures have been taken. For instance, 72 road signs near ten educational institutions have been restored, and street lighting has been restored near five schools to improve visibility at night. Three new pedestrian traffic lights have also been installed along the routes to schools.

Additionally, the city has seen the launch of TOR, a unified digital road safety platform. This system integrates data from road cameras, drones, and patrol units nationwide to monitor traffic conditions in real time and identify accident-prone areas. The aim is to track dangerous driving behaviors, including prolonged driving without rest breaks, and predict risks to prevent accidents before they occur.

Intelligent video surveillance drones equipped with the Sergek system have also been tested in Astana. These drones are capable of detecting traffic violations, locating wanted vehicles, and enhancing real-time enforcement.

Issues of road safety are regularly discussed at the city's Coordination Council meetings. The most common causes of accidents involving pedestrians are crossing the road in an unauthorized place, ignoring traffic signals, crossing in front of approaching vehicles, and walking along the road when a sidewalk is available.

The key causes of road traffic accidents in Astana include failure to observe speed limits and unsafe distances, collisions with heavy or roadside equipment, and driver errors. Preventive efforts focus on advanced digital monitoring platforms like TOR, drones, and predictive analytics for traffic safety enhancement.
