Current TikTok beauty fad: Achieving a weary appearance

The "Tired Girl" makeup trend has become a viral sensation among Gen Z, characterised by embracing the appearance of sleep deprivation. This aesthetic contrasts sharply with traditional beauty standards and recent trends like the "clean girl" look.

Origins and Influences

The trend draws inspiration from various sources, including the grunge movement, which emphasised a raw, unpolished look. This influence is combined with elements of Korean beauty's "hangover makeup," creating a unique fusion of styles.

Cultural Significance

  • Challenging Traditional Beauty Standards: By celebrating tiredness rather than masking it, the trend challenges traditional beauty norms that often emphasise flawless skin and vibrant appearance. It aligns with a broader cultural movement questioning the necessity of extensive beauty routines.
  • Divergence from "Clean Girl" Aesthetic: Unlike the "clean girl" look, characterised by minimal makeup and flushed cheeks, the "Tired Girl" trend is intentionally less polished. It rejects the idea of spending hours on beauty routines, instead embracing a more relaxed, less curated appearance.

Gen Z and the "Core" Phenomenon

  • The "Tired Girl" look is part of the broader "core" phenomenon, where niche internet aesthetics emerge and evolve rapidly. This trend reflects Gen Z's inclination towards unique, internet-driven styles that resonate with their lived experiences.
  • For Gen Z, embracing the "Tired Girl" aesthetic is about expressing authenticity and rejecting societal pressure to conform to traditional beauty standards. It represents a desire for self-expression and the acceptance of imperfections.

Notable figures who have embraced the "Tired Girl" trend include Jenna Ortega, the actor portraying Wednesday Addams in the Netflix series, and other celebrities like Lily Rose-Depp, Gabbriette, influencers Emma Chamberlain, Danielle Marcan, and Lara Violetta.

The Tired Girl trend is now a category on TikTok, with numerous tutorials on how to achieve the sleep-deprived look. Some of the most popular TikTok tutorials on "Tired Girl" makeup have gained over 300,000 views.

However, it's important to note that the "Tired Girl" trend is different from goth, South Korea's viral aegyo-sal makeup trend, and Grunge fashion. The trend is fleeting, unlike movements like Grunge that grew from anti-establishment values, music scenes, and community solidarity.

The illusion of naturally flushed lips, almost like they've been gently bitten, was key in Ortega's makeup look in season one. The eyeshadow in Ortega's look in season one was dark, but it was only ever a light application. The hair and makeup artist for Jenna Ortega in season one, Tara McDonald, aimed for a polished but natural look using minimal products and highlighting Ortega's natural features.

For season two, Nirvana Jalalvand aimed to portray Ortega as someone who doesn't spend hours doing her hair and makeup and has more important things to do.

Dan Hastings-Narayanin, the deputy foresight editor at The Future Laboratory, a trend forecasting firm, stated that the roots of Tired Girl don't run anywhere near as deep as movements like Grunge. He views Gen Z's embrace of the Tired Girl trend as a return to vulnerability and relatability amid relentless pressures facing young people, including academic and extracurricular juggling, managing student debt, navigating a fragile job market, and striving for personal goals like saving the planet. However, he also suggests that the Tired Girl look is fleeting and poised for replacement by the next viral moment.
