Current News: AfD Holds Strong / Union Makes Slight Gains / Greens Face Losses / Merz Faces Pressure
In a recent survey, the Alliance for Progress and Social Justice (BSW) has seen a significant drop in support, now standing at just 3%. The CDU/CSU, on the other hand, has improved by one point, with 25% of federal citizens backing the party. The FDP and other parties remain unchanged, with the FDP at 3% and other parties at 6%.
The survey reveals that a majority of citizens, 70%, believe Friedrich Merz should focus more on domestic political issues. This sentiment is shared by 78% of respondents who feel that Merz makes too many promises he cannot keep. The AfD, currently the strongest political force in Germany, has 26% support, with 70% of its supporters rejecting Merz's claim to leadership on the European stage.
A significant number of respondents, 58%, believe Merz makes decisions too frequently alone and without consultation. This sentiment is not exclusive to the general public, as even among CDU/CSU supporters, 44% share this criticism. The Left has gained one point and now has 12% support, while the Greens have lost one point, standing at 12%.
The economic outlook is also a cause for concern, with only 15% of respondents expecting an improvement, while 63% expect a deterioration. Doubts about Merz's capabilities are particularly high among AfD supporters (78%), Left supporters (69%), and SPD supporters (39%).
The majority of citizens who view Merz's promises as untenable are those critical of his conservative and anti-climate positions. This includes activists, voters skeptical of his right-leaning policies, and critics from parties like Volt and social groups wary of his approach to migration and social issues.
Despite the criticism, 48% of respondents see Merz as capable. However, 46% of respondents believe Merz is overwhelmed by the office, a sentiment that is reflected in the current 30% satisfaction rate with Merz's work as Federal Chancellor, compared to 67% expressing dissatisfaction. A majority of CDU/CSU supporters (55%) share this assessment.
The SPD remains at 13% support. The survey results suggest a need for Merz to address the concerns of the public and regain trust, particularly in his ability to handle domestic political issues and deliver on his promises.
