Current Events Summary for August 18:
In a remarkable achievement, 10-year-old Bodhana Sivanandan from Britain has made history by becoming the youngest female player to defeat a grandmaster in a chess game.
During the final round of the 2025 British Chess Championships in Liverpool, Bodhana, at just 10 years, 5 months, and 3 days old, secured this remarkable achievement by defeating 60-year-old Grandmaster Peter Wells. This victory not only broke a record but also earned her the Women's International Master title.
Bodhana's journey to this achievement began when she was just five years old, accidentally discovering a chess board at home. Her talent quickly became apparent, leading to multiple global junior championships and recognition in the chess community. Despite being in a challenging position during the game against Wells, Bodhana managed to turn the tables with strategic moves, ultimately leading to Wells' resignation.
Her achievement surpasses the previous record held by American chess player Carissa Yip, who was 10 years, 11 months, and 20 days old when she defeated a grandmaster in 2019. Bodhana's success marks a significant milestone, not only in British chess but also globally, as she continues to inspire young players with her dedication and skill.
Meanwhile, President Donald Trump is hosting a summit at the White House today with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and several European leaders. In a recent statement, Trump stated that if Zelensky wants the war in Ukraine to end, he must agree to some of Russia's conditions, including that Ukraine cede Crimea and agree never to join NATO. Trump has also threatened "severe" consequences on Moscow if Russian President Vladimir Putin doesn't end the fighting between Russia and Ukraine.
In other news, hundreds of thousands of Israelis gathered around Hostages Square in Tel Aviv to demand an end to the war in Gaza and the return of the remaining 50 hostages. The events were led by family members of the hostages and the October Council, which represents bereaved families from the war.
