Nintendo World Championships: NES Edition Speedrun Competition #22 Now Live on Nintendo Switch

Nintendo has launched the latest installment of the Nintendo World Championships: NES Edition Speedrun Competition, exclusively for Nintendo Switch Online members. This global event invites players to compete in speedrunning classic NES games, bringing a dash of nostalgia to the modern gaming scene.

The competition, which runs until December 16 at 12:59 a.m. PT, features five different challenges from various Nintendo games. These include tasks such as completing levels or collecting items as quickly as possible in games like Super Mario Bros., The Legend of Zelda, and Super Mario Bros. 3.

To participate, players need a Nintendo Switch with the Nintendo World Championships: NES Edition game, an active Nintendo Switch Online membership, and the ability to access the World Championships Mode in the game. The game, which was released on the Nintendo eShop on July 18, 2024, brings over 150 speedrun challenges from 13 classic NES games in a modern competition format.

Players can practice and improve their times in single-player Speedrun Mode, unlocking challenges and pins. But the real challenge comes in "World Championships Mode," where registered Nintendo Switch Online subscribers submit their best times on the weekly rotating challenges. Up to eight players can compete locally in Party Mode.

The top speedrunners can enter ranked competition #22 (and other numbered competitions), aiming to beat global competitors' submitted times. Players can check their rankings and watch replays of top runs for each challenge from the previous competition, which might offer tips to improve their own times.

The competition is part of a series of events for speedrunners, encouraging players to improve their personal bests. Internet access is required for online features. It's important to note that the competition is not available in all countries.

Nintendo Switch Online membership (sold separately) and a Nintendo Account are required for online features. The tougher challenges could potentially test players' speedrunning skills to their limits. This setup recreates the spirit of the 1990, 2015, and 2017 Nintendo World Championships by blending nostalgia with a worldwide online speedrunning contest on the Switch platform.

Players can also watch replays of the top runs for each challenge, offering a glimpse into the world of speedrunning and the strategies used by the top players. So, whether you're a seasoned speedrunner or a newcomer to the world of speedrunning, the Nintendo World Championships: NES Edition Speedrun Competition #22 offers a fun and challenging experience for all.
