Cult leader Carlo von Tiedemann passes away.

Known for his lovingly crude wit and a career that spanned over five decades, the iconic German radio and television host, Carlo von Tiedemann, has sadly left us. His family confirmed his passing at the age of 81 in Hamburg.

Rumors and Revelries Considered an NDR institution, von Tiedemann entertained generations with television shows like "Die aktuelle Schaubude" and radio programs such as "Hamburg am Mittag" and "Große Freiheit." In his beloved city of Hamburg, he also served as the stadium announcer for HSV between 1991 and 1998. Occasionally, he graced our screens with small series roles in "Großstadtrevier."

A Life Among Legends Joachim Knuth, NDR's intendant, praised von Tiedemann's unique style: "With his witty, spontaneous, and heartwarming manner, he captivated several generations and remained one of our absolute audience favorites until the end." The NDR's loss was profound, expressing their condolences to his family.

A Unique Journey

Born on October 20, 1943, in Stargard, Pomerania, von Tiedemann had an unconventional journey to the entertainment industry. Despite his esteemed lineage—his father was a Prussian army general, and his mother was a von Kleist—von Tiedemann’s career in the limelight was certainly not foreseen. After an apprenticeship as a publishing salesman, he ventured into journalism, writing as a police reporter for the "Hamburger Abendblatt." Later, he served as a correspondent for the Springer foreign service in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

From Scandal to Redemption Throughout his life, von Tiedemann faced personal challenges, including health problems and a highly publicized struggle with substance abuse and financial difficulties. Yet, he bore that burden with resilience, paying off his debts and refusing to dwell on the past. "I've never pretended," von Tiedemann explained in an NDR interview.

Commitment Beyond the Screen

In addition to his legendary career, von Tiedemann was deeply committed to the Hamburg children's hospice "Sternenbrücke." His charismatic personality shone brightly, not only on screen but also in his personal interactions, as he often regaled listeners with stories about his friends in the industry, from Tony Holiday to Bata Illic. In his later years, despite struggling with health issues, von Tiedemann continued his work and maintained a presence on NDR, hosting the Saturday NDR Schlager radio show "Carlo knows them all."

Though he may no longer physically be with us, the indelible mark that Carlo von Tiedemann left on German television and radio remains. Farewell, Carlo. Your laughter, your stories, and your wit will never be forgotten.
