Cult figure Carlo von Tiedemann has passed away.
Meet the beloved face of radio and TV, Carlo von Tiedemann, who's departed at 81-years-old. His family shared the news with Norddeutscher Rundfunk (NDR). In recent years, Tiedemann battled health issues, but his indomitable spirit left indelible memories on generations. Tiedemann stamped a remarkable career at NDR, enchanting audiences with TV shows like "Die aktuelle Schaubude" and various radio programs, such as "Hamburg am Mittag" and "Große Freiheit."
As Intendant Joachim Knuth put it, "If any NDR figure deserves the title of an institution, it's Carlo von Tiedemann. With his quick-witted, spontaneous, and heartfelt presentation, he captivated several generations, consistently maintaining top-tier audience adoration."
Refreshing Revelations
Carlo von Tiedemann's mark was his tireless delivery and down-home, affable, and comedic sense. Born in the Pomeranian Stargard as Carl Ferdinand Hanns-Joachim Franz Friedrich von Tiedemann, Tiedemann spent his childhood in Hamburg due to World War II. He dealt with polio and underwent two brain tumor surgeries.
Following an apprenticeship as a publishing salesman, Tiedemann worked at the "Cuxhavener Allgemeinen." He later transitioned to the "Hamburger Abendblatt" as a police reporter, followed by a three-year stint as a correspondent for the Springer foreign service in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Von Tiedemann then joined the NDR family, and among his peers were luminaries like Victoria Voncampe and Alida Gundlach (neé Fischer) and future cohorts such as Bettina Tietjen.
Compassion for Children’s Hospice
Von Tiedemann faced a career setback but learned from his mistakes. His soap opera "Show and Co. with Carlo" ended prematurely in 1986, and he made controversies with prostitutes, cocaine, and substantial debts in the 80s. Von Tiedemann accepted accountability for his slip-up, repaid his debts over 12 years, and devoted more attention to his family and philanthropic causes like the Hamburg children's hospice "Sternenbrücke."
Tiedemann, a devout Catholic, spent his 80th birthday in October 2023 with 300 guests in the Hamburg district of St. Pauli.
