Brewers Clinch Narrow Lead in NL Central with 8-4 Victory Over Cubs
The Milwaukee Brewers secured a one-game advantage in the NL Central standings following their 8-4 win over the Chicago Cubs on Monday night. With the victory, the Brewers improved their record to 63-43, while the Cubs dropped to 62-44.
The game started off shaky for Brewers' pitcher Jacob Misiorowski, who was hit by a line shot off the bat of Seiya Suzuki, causing an injury to his left knee. Despite the early setback, the Brewers managed to take a 4-3 lead in the third inning, scoring four runs off Matthew Boyd.
Misiorowski's night took a turn for the worse as he threw wildly to first, allowing two more runs to score. He was later replaced by Trevor Megill, who recorded the last out with two runners on base to notch his 24th save of the season.
The Brewers' offense was led by Christian Yelich, who had an RBI double, a two-run single, and a two-run homer in the game. Isaac Collins and Brice Turang also contributed to the team's scoring, with Collins recording a two-run single and Turang a sacrifice fly.
The Cubs managed to score a run in the seventh inning, thanks to Nico Hoerner's single that brought home Andrew Vaughn. However, the Brewers responded with Yelich's homer to extend their lead to 8-4.
Jackson Chourio went 0 for 3 with two walks, ending his career-high hitting streak at 20 games. The Cubs' Colin Rea (8-4, 4.06 ERA) and the Brewers' Quinn Priester (9-2, 3.28) are set to face off in the next game on Tuesday night.
With the updated NL Central standings, the Brewers hold a narrow lead over the Cubs, followed by the Cincinnati Reds and the St. Louis Cardinals.
