Cubs and Blue Jays face off, Berrios securing a victory, and Clement knocked another crucial homerun
The Toronto Blue Jays secured a 5-1 victory over the Chicago Cubs at the Rogers Centre, with a standout performance from Ernie Clement.
In the fourth inning, Clement provided the bulk of the Blue Jays' offense with a three-run home run, marking a significant contribution to the team's win. His impressive home run hitting has been a notable part of his contributions this season, highlighted by clutch and multi-run homers that have helped the team win key games.
Clement's season batting stats are strong, with a .286 batting average over 117 games, 118 hits, 36 RBIs, and 63 runs scored. He has shown significant power recently, hitting three home runs in his last four games as of August 18, 2025. Against left-handed pitchers specifically, he is even more productive, batting .352 with 6 home runs and 16 RBIs in 154 plate appearances.
Ty France, acquired from Minnesota at the deadline, had a less impactful game, getting thrown out at home in the second inning. France has gotten off to a terrific start with the Jays, but he is not considered one of their best bats. France ranks 545th in major-league players who have been on base this season in sprint speed at 25.0 feet per second, while Clement ranks ahead of France in sprint speed at 24.1 feet per second.
Nathan Lukes made a gutsy dive to catch a Nico Hoerner liner in the second inning, potentially preventing a game-tying triple. Bo Bichette made a hard-left snatch of a Hoerner grounder in the fourth inning and made an incredible throw to end the inning. Andrés Giménez also made a terrific play on a Pete Crow-Armstrong grounder in the fourth inning.
Jose Berriios pitched 5 1/3 shutout innings, walking four and limiting the Chicago Cubs to two hits. His impressive performance improved his record to 9-4. Jeff Hoffman pitched a perfect ninth inning, redeeming his shaky performance from Sunday. George Springer has not yet returned to the lineup.
Daulton Varsho hit a solo home run in the eighth inning, his 12th homer in 32 games. Crow-Armstrong, the Cubs centre-fielder, is the son of Ashley Crow who played Billy's mother in the movie "Little Big League". Crow-Armstrong went 0-for-4 in the game, lowering his OPS to .815.
Giménez returned to the game after missing almost six weeks. Pete Crow-Armstrong and France both had less impactful games, with France ranking lower in sprint speed than the majority of major-league players this season. Despite this, the Blue Jays' strong offensive performance, led by Clement, was enough to secure the victory.
The Blue Jays had a season-high crowd of 43,003 at the Rogers Centre for the game against the Chicago Cubs, reflecting the excitement surrounding the team's strong performance this season.
