Cuba Secures First Medal in Asunción 2025 through Rowing Victory
Cuban Rowing Team Wins Bronze at II Junior Pan American Games
The Cuban rowing team has made a splash at the II Junior Pan American Games in Asunción, Paraguay, securing a bronze medal in the men's coxless four event. The team, consisting of Leduar Suárez, Roberto Carlos Paz, Adel Gutiérrez, and Henry Heredia, finished the race with a time of 5:45.96 minutes, just behind Chile (gold) and Brazil (silver) [1][3].
The Cuban delegation has been performing exceptionally well at the games, with a total of four gold, two silver, and four bronze medals as of mid-August 2025. This places Cuba ninth in the medal table, with several competitions such as wrestling, athletics, canoeing, and weightlifting still ongoing. With high hopes, Cuba is looking forward to winning more medals before the event concludes on August 23, 2025 [2].
Other Cuban bronze medals have been won in disciplines like archery (mixed recurve team) and judo (Lisriales González, 78 kg), adding to the country's overall medal count [2][4].
Roberto Carlos Paz, the captain of the rowing team, also carried the Cuban flag in the opening ceremony. Despite not reaching the podium in the double sculls event, he remains optimistic about the team's performance. He believes that the order of the podium was more or less as expected [5].
Leduar Suárez, a member of the medal-winning team, shares Paz's optimism. He expects more Cuban medals in the competition and believes that the coxless four team, which also includes him, has the opportunity to surpass their current performance on Monday [6].
Meanwhile, the Brazilian pair, João Batista and Daniel Passold, won the rowing event without a coxswain with a time of 6:31.97 minutes. The Chilean pair, Rodrigo Paz and Pedro Labatub, won the same event with a faster time of 6:42.63 minutes [1].
On the same day, Natalie Morales and Claudia Tolón will compete in the qualifying rounds for women's double sculls. The coxless four rowing team, consisting of Leduar, Roberto Carlos, Adel, and Henry, will also have their chance to compete on Monday [7].
