Crystal Palace Secure Progress in EFL Cup Third Round, Defeating Millwall on Penalties; Aston Villa Eliminated by Brentford in the Same Round
Aston Villa Eliminated from EFL Cup, Palace Advance in Penalty Shootout
In the latest round of the EFL Cup, there were some exciting matches that saw several upsets and close calls. One of the most noteworthy encounters was between Crystal Palace and Millwall, while Aston Villa faced Brentford.
Crystal Palace have been on a roll against lower-league opposition in recent FA Cup and EFL Cup games, and their streak continued against Millwall. The last seven meetings between the two teams have ended in a victory for Palace, a feat achieved only once before, between October 1986 and September 1993. In a tense penalty shootout, Palace managed to progress, with backup goalkeeper Walter Benitez denying both Aidomo Emakhu and Tristan Crama.
Meanwhile, Aston Villa were eliminated from the competition after a dramatic penalty shootout against Brentford, following a 1-1 draw in their all-Premier League clash. Harvey Elliot scored his first goal for Aston Villa in the 43rd minute, but Aaron Hickey equalized for Brentford in the 59th minute. Despite finding the net after going four games without scoring in the EFL Cup, it wasn't enough for Villa to secure a victory.
Elsewhere, Grimsby Town made a significant mark in the EFL Cup, progressing to the fourth round for the first time since the 2001-02 season. Their journey has been impressive, as they have already eliminated the higher-ranked team Manchester United in the current season. Grimsby Town's victory over Sheffield Wednesday, with Jaze Kabia scoring the only goal in the 49th minute, marked the first time they have eliminated two sides from a higher division in a single EFL Cup campaign since 2005-06.
These results set the stage for an exciting fourth round of the EFL Cup, where these teams will look to continue their impressive form and potentially make a deep run in the competition.
