Cryptocurrency enthusiasts allegedly reveal intentions to throw sex toys during WNBA matches
In a series of shocking incidents, a group behind a meme coin called Green Dildo Coin, also known as DILDO, has taken responsibility for the recent occurrences of green dildos being thrown onto WNBA courts during games.
The group, composed of meme coin creators, admitted to coordinating these stunts as a way to promote their crypto coin. Their involvement is both promotional and ideological, using these sex toy tosses as a marketing tactic to draw attention to their meme coin. However, the actions are widely seen as misogynistic and infantile, aimed at mocking women athletes and the idea of women playing sports.
Despite their claim that their motive is to "save" the crypto space from scams and influencer-driven hype, their methods have been condemned as disrespectful and harmful. The coin’s value has surged dramatically alongside these publicity stunts, indicating the acts also serve as a calculated financial promotion for the meme coin.
Last week, on July 29, a sex toy landed on the court during the Atlanta Dream's game against the Golden State Valkyries. This followed another incident at Atlanta's home game against Phoenix, where one person was arrested. More recently, on Wednesday, an 18-year-old man named Kaden Lopez was arrested in Phoenix for throwing a sex toy at a Phoenix Mercury game, which hit another fan. Lopez, however, claimed he was not associated with the cryptocurrency group. According to the Phoenix Police Department, Lopez said he saw the trend on social media and bought his own sex toy to throw.
An unnamed source from the cryptocurrency group admitted to orchestrating at least some of the incidents involving sex toys being thrown at WNBA games. They stated that they have more pranks planned, but they will be "a lot lighter" and "a lot more tasteful." Similar incidents have occurred at several other WNBA games, including another game in Atlanta.
The WNBA did not immediately comment on the reports of the cryptocurrency group connection. However, the league stated it was working with arena personnel to identify culprits and "ensure appropriate action is taken." The incidents have angered WNBA players, leading to at least two arrests.
