Crucial Timetable for 2024 General Election: Important Dates for King's Speech and Subsequent Budget Announcement
New Labour Government Takes Office: A New Era Begins
After a landmark victory in the 2024 UK general election, Sir Keir Starmer's Labour Party has formed the new government, ending 14 years of Conservative rule. The election, held on July 4, 2024, saw a 170-seat majority for Labour, marking a significant shift in British politics.
The new government will officially commence its work on July 5, 2024, following the state opening of Parliament on Wednesday, 17 July. During this ceremony, King Charles III will read out the legislative agenda, setting the tone for the new government's policies.
The days leading up to this event will see the King's Speech debated by MPs over several days, starting from 17 July. This debate will provide an opportunity for MPs to scrutinise and discuss the government's proposed policies.
In the meantime, Sir Keir Starmer is busy putting together his cabinet team. Among those expected to join are Rachel Reeves, Yvette Cooper, and David Lammy. The new Prime Minister has also appointed Sir Keir Starmer himself as the new Prime Minister, following his appointment by King Charles III.
The Parliamentary calendar will begin in earnest after MPs have learned the ropes or gotten their feet under their old desks. It is expected that there may be a Parliamentary recess in late-July or August, but the exact dates are yet to be determined.
During the pre-election period, government ministers technically remained in their positions, but with restrictions on what they could do. Rishi Sunak will remain as Conservative leader until his successor is appointed.
Opposition party leaders may step down before 17 July, paving the way for new leadership within the Conservative Party.
The first bills of the new government will begin to make their way through Parliament from 17 July onwards. The new government's first Budget or fiscal event will take place on Friday, 13 September, or potentially the following week, depending on the government's preference. This will provide a clear picture of the new government's financial plans and policies.
In addition to the reform of wealth taxes, boosting the property market, and widening access to physical banking, the policy agenda set out in Sir Keir Starmer's manifesto remains to be seen in full.
Upon their return to Parliament, MPs will swear an oath to the King and elect a speaker. The selection of Select Committee chairs and members is also scheduled for next week, based on the number of seats held by parties.
As the new government settles in, the British public eagerly awaits the implementation of the policies promised during the election campaign. The next few months are set to be a period of significant change and development for the United Kingdom.
